Message	When you are in 5th gear, it's hard for the engine to turn the wheels (That's why you downshift to pass) and conversely it's easy for the wheels to turn the engine. First gear is the opposite. Reverse actually is a lower gear ratio than 1st so reverse would provide the most holding force wether you are facing up hill or down hill.
